The Pieta

This is my favorite depiction of Christ's Passion. The French artist, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, used his wife as model for the Blessed Mother and the angels, which is why they look so similar. This painting is especially moving because it was painted in 1876 just after Bouguereau lost his own son and infant daughter. Just a year after it was painted, his wife and infant son followed them in death. The brushstrokes seem to be painted by someone who knew this kind of grief intimately.
